“Are You Ready?” is a series of three classes that takes a down-to-earth approach to emergency preparedness. Imagine our potential impact upon our communities in a time of need if everyone who attended worship also attended these classes and got their families in to preparedness.
Having a plan not only creates a means to keep our families safe, but having a plan also means that we, Christians, can be prepared to reach out to others in a time of need. It means that when despair reigns down, we will be prepared to rise up.
Jesus tells us to be prepared and prophetic words have urged the same. “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like the ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was long in coming… And while (the foolish ones) were on their way to buy oil the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.” Mathew 25:1-10
It’s hard to imagine Jesus shutting the door on anyone. But there will be a time when some are ready and others are not. And on that day, be it a last-day one in a series of challenging days, some will be ready and others will wish they had done more while they had the time. Physically we fill our oil jars. Spiritually we trim our wicks so that our lives may be a light that points the way to Jesus. This calls for readiness, for courage, and for bold discussions about what each of us can do to be a people prepared to be a light in any time of darkness.
